Why you should use Repetition on your slides

Repetition is creating a pattern. And this is great for presentations because people like paying attention to patterns. Using repetition throughout your slides from the first slide to the end, will act like a guide for your audience. The reason is they will recognise and look for the repetition; not necessarily consciously, but they WILL notice it. This helps them stay engaged, but does not take the place of preparation and great content.

How to use Repetition

In the video, I describe three ways to use repetition. Here I will add a little more detail where necessary. The main thing is that you need to try it yourself, or at least be more aware of using repetition. Another thing to remember is that rules are meant to be broken. Try these basics of presentation design first, then experiment once you get the hang of following the rules.

  • First, and easiest is to use the same size font and placement of titles. This might seem like common sense, and it is, but you would not believe how many times I have seen presentations use different sized fonts, different fonts altogether and have them placed like the text was sneezed onto the screen. Consistency is key.
  • Second, use the same font you used for your titles and use it at the bottom of your slides to tie your message together. I like this because it gives you a chance to introduce something and summarise it on the same slide. This is most effective when your audience is made up of non-native English speakers.
  • And third, take something visual like a logo or image and repeat it on every slide, but add a bit of variety by moving it around or playing with it's size. I also like this method because it gives you a chance to be creative with placement of whatever it is you're repeating. I've often repeated a client's logo on every slide but in different places and in different sizes. The effect is as if the logo was literally moving from slide-to-slide.

It takes practice

Although repetition is a pretty easy concept to apply, it does take some practice to use it consistently. What you'll find is that you will start to get more creative with it. You'll also find that your slides will start looking more professional and will have a kind of flow to them. This will make your presentations much easier for your audience to follow and for you to get your message across.

Just remember

Slick presentation slides can never replace thorough understanding of your audience, time to prepare and great content. You don't even need slides if your content is good and you know your audience.

However, simple, well-designed presentation slides can do a great job supporting your message and keeping the audience interested.

Repetition is effective because people are naturally attracted by repeating patterns. It's a simple way to add visual consistency, which is just a fancy way of saying professional-looking.
